Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Quest: No player cards to rate here, just the quest. Overall, another win for the special print-on-demand quests. This is different from the first few in that it isn't a massive battle, but is instead a race against time. The mechanisms used in this quest are really clever, particularly the time progression. Once per round (or also from some card effects) a progress is added to the current time card. 4 counters on Eventide move you to Dusk; another 4 move you to Midnight; 4 on Midnight lose the game. The best part of the design is that certain encounter card effects get worse the later the time stage, which is an extra incentive to finish quickly. I found this even better than the time counter mechanism introduced in the Voice of Isengard/Ringmaker cycle. The second big twist -- using willpower as attack -- wasn't as innovative and really just directed deck building away from attacking characters with low willpower toward everything willpower. Ratings: If I were to rate any expansions to this game in the context of board/card games as a whole, they'd get an 8,9 or 10 because they are part of a game that I give a 9 to overall. However, on a separate scale within just this game system, I'd give this a 9 for the quest.

Excellent and thematic adventure that puts players on a time limit and throwing hordes of undead at them.
