Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

(Easy mode) The Tower of Cirith Ungol: Thematically sound. Can be swingy because of the enemy-matching mechanics (match = both disappear), but that makes the adventure tense and exciting. I'll never look at watchdogs the same again, especially if they're creepy. The Black Gate Opens: I don't enjoy "survival mode" video games, as I prefer challenges with concrete achievable goals. So this LotR scenario was different, but not my cup of tea. We made it to round 10, then we all shrugged. Mount Doom: To quote the manual: Easy mode is ideal for new players and players who prefer the narrative and cooperative aspects of the game with less challenge. Yeah, OK. We lasted 5.5 rounds, threw up our hands, and expressed our strong disappointment with the end of the Saga. What lies beyond stage 1 of this four-stage scenario? We'll never know, as stage 1 was our final resting place. The end of our journey will be to play out the Grey Havens block with new decks - I already own the GH stuff, so why not - and then call it quits. I almost regret buying into LotR at all, but my kids enjoyed the long ride. And I had my share of fun as well.
