Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

The Dead Marshes - completed in 18 rounds. Running out of encounter deck and Gollum happened to be one of three cards remaining (the other 2 being the bees that get reshuffled in every time they die).

Fun quest. The Escape test mechanism really makes for some tough choices. I always had to keep some good questing Heroes to the side for the Escape test. I was able to pull this one out on my first run through 2 player solo. The new ally Faramir was a huge help! He will be in my deck for a while.

The penultimate pack of the Mirkwood cycle, the Dead Marshes was one of the more difficult quests of its cycle, though it has not held up particularly well and is rather easy with today's card pool. At the time, the escape tests that required extra willpower was a challenge, resulting in the first time anyone ever thought that putting Unexpected Courage on Eowyn would be a good idea. As willpower has become easier to come by, this quest has become easier to defeat, and its big enemy, the Giant Marsh Worm, is quite puny by today's standards. The quest also suffers from the fact that if you lost Gollum and he got shuffled into the encounter deck, the quest became a boring slog to find him, and god help you if he turned up as a shadow card. This almost created a situation where losing him into the encounter deck became a de facto loss. This problem was rectified in the Nightmare version of the quest, as was the issue of the quest's difficulty level, so experienced players might want to go straight to that version and ignore the standard mode. As far as player cards, this one has several solid staples, as well as a few coasters. But the main reason to pick up this pack is the hero, Boromir, who is arguably the best Tactics hero, if not the best hero in the game period, even to this day. He's worth the admission alone and significantly boosts the rating of this pack.
