Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Very interesting scenario demanding focused deckbuilding while at the same time offering several paths of victory as well as challenging gameplay.

[easy mode] In game 1, we couldn't get past the first stage. An ignominious and frustrating defeat. In game 2, we lucked into early threat reduction - which made all the difference. We were no longer anxious and defenseless against a battery of ships, and we rode the wave to the end. Such was the conclusion of our LotR gaming: 2011-2018. I was pleased with the creativity and delivery of the Grey Havens block, but I was also happy for it to end. My one-note Rohan exploration deck - though critical as a support squad - just wasn't fun. But sometimes you take a hit for the family to keep them interested and excited. Anyway, the LotR money pit is cemented over, with not even a gravestone to mark its passing. My final impression: Brilliant, infuriating, and everything in-between.
