Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Finished up the Dwarrowdelf cycle for LOTR: LCG Saturday night. 2 player solo. Was able to beat the Balrog on turn 7. My blue/red deck was able to keep it's Threat level down (blue card that reduces threat by 6 or by 2 on each player) and I had Feint which stops an enemy from attacking this round. So, they never got attacked by any enemies. I used the other deck to get out Allies (sacrificial lambs) and really laid out a whole bunch of damage on the Balrog. I had him down to 5 hit points when I was able to win by flipping the cards in Stage 3. This was a super fun, puzzly quest which I really enjoyed. My familiarity with the cards has really helped me like the game even more as well as my win percentage. I will go through the next cycle probably in 2018.

The Lord of the Rings LCG is so good I can't really believe FFG made this (well, after seeing the huge amount of faqs and clarifications I actually believe it was made by them...). The second cycle of expansions adds more awesomeness in form of new heroes, cards for the decks, and new quests. Shadow and Flame brings some new very useful player cards, and the new powerhouse hero Elrond, but it is first and foremost the epic, awesome conclusion of the Dwarrowdelf cycle: an upstream struggle against the most fearsome enemy ever! Could the Balrog be beaten?

This appeared to be impossible on the face, but on our one play we made it half way through prior to being mercilessly slaughtered.
