Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Finally beat this on my 17th attempt. 2 player. Cards from core set only. Yeah I'm pretty bad ass (pretty lucky more like it). Very difficult with just the core set cards. Probably a decent challenge even with the full card pool. It was fun though. I was about ready to say it was impossible and expand the cards I could use when I finally won. Great way to revisit the old quest, but make it more challenging.

Ramps the difficulty up a little but the main challenge is still overcoming the hurdle of the Hill Troll in the beginning of the game.

An outrageously entertaining improvement to the original core box quest. Check out my blog entry that chronicles my initial experience: http://downtheanduin.blogspot.com/2014/02/the-fellowship-risks-riparian-path-lotr.html
