The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.

Very cool fast playing asymmetrical game with meaningful decisions nearly every card play. Be sure to play with correct ruleset (one socialist at the beginning of the game etc.) otherwise East has got a clear edge. WSdV also has a superb online adaptation (at playboardgamecore.net). Update: the online problem is that at times the game sort of plays itself with some optimal/forced moves and there's not much you can do about it if you play against an opponent of similar skills.

Great 2-player game. It reminds me of Twilight Struggle, but it is less swingy than TS. That is both a good and a bad thing.

Really a fun and unique feeling game. The shared card pool totally changes the feel of the game and leads to lots of great decisions and action denial opportunities. The end of year phases will feel obtuse at first, but after a little while you understand what you are trying to focus on.
