Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
In games with a trading mechanic, the players can exchange game items between each other.
Trading
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Windward was my main pickup from gencon 2021. It is very fun and beautiful. The co op mode has become more popular with my group with slightly modified difficulty to rules to make it feel like more of a struggle, because the normal game is just too short. I was expecting to get more of a tactical feel from the game considering the way it looks, but it's just to short to get a good feel of out maneuvering the whales and opponent boats. All that considered, I just love this game. It's so fun and all of my complaints are really just me wanting even more out of it because of how cool and thematic the game is. There is a lot of opportunity for an expansion here to make the game a bit more robust, and I will definitely pick it up when/if it comes out.

This game has a great concept, but rather poor execution. The atmospheric pirating of space whales for plunder and villainy is such a fantastic theme, but the lack of polish and clunky turns killed it for me. Some aspects of the game felt thrown in, some felt obsolete, and overall it just gave the impression of a game that was rushed/needed more love.

I'm not sure about this one. I think maybe it is too complicated for what it gives back, it seemed hard to get into and maybe over too quickly. I will be giving it a second chance
