I was really wanting to get this one, expecting a skirmish game with some really clean rules. But alas, it isn't that clean for me. The setup is a bit fiddly. And the production has some strange qualities. The artwork on the cards doesn't match what the card can do. The icons are a little strange. And the race aspect to gather gems while works fine in concept, it has the frustration of too similar in color for the color-blind. Another thing is the characters are face down to start the game which I find just odd and maybe unnecessary for the cost of frustration in remember which is which. Lovely miniatures!

This is between a 7 and 8 for me, but right now I'm leaning 8 because it packs fun, interesting decisions and lots of player interaction in a quick playtime. It isn't a mind blowing heavy game, but the multi use cards provide lots of options and flexibility, the selection of starting spots adds interaction and strategic planning, and the asymmetric factions add depth and planning while not forcing your strategy down a single path. You are always engaged during other people's turns, and you will have to make decisions and sacrifices in what characters you use and how aggressively you attack others. I wish there was an adjustment for board size with fewer players like there is in Tyrants, but even still you know where the gems are and can attack them if you want. Any game that gives you several paths to victory and difficult interactive decisions along the way in a short playtime is a winner for me.

300 games in and I've become a little jaded and not many games nowadays are catching my attention. I had heard of Wildlands in passing but dismissed it quite quickly as it looked a bit too nerdy for us with all its orcs and elve tropes and I knew my wife wouldn't be interested in a fighting fantasy game. I recently picked this up in a trade along with another game that I actually wanted. Due to the simple ruleset and lovely components, I thought what the heck lets give it a go. Wow, what a game! Its the first game in a long while that's actually had me thinking about it and wanting to play again. Even my wife has asked to play it again! Even more so my 14-year-old has asked to play it again. So much fun. Quick to learn and set up. Gorgeous components and art. The fantasy theme has a very cool and fun side to it which makes it more accessible. We all feel in love with this game for its ease of play, short playtime and fantastic decision making. The only thing not making this a ten are the minis that whilst great quality minis, but just too small
