Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration.Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

Good game with well-interlocked mechanisms. Seems like each game in the series gets progressively more fiddly and complex. As usual, good iconography and fantastic art. Glad to have played this but would never own it (too complex for me).

A rewarding deck builder with a great decision space. This is a game where it you can really tailor your deck to fit your chosen strategy. A three card hand seems limiting for a deck-builder at first, but between your rotating tableau and plentiful bonuses on the board, there are always options available to nudge things your way. Like Paladins, the rules seem overly complex at first, but are easily internalised and the gameplay loop is smooth and addictive. Viscounts can overstay it's welcome if nobody is actively pushing towards the end game conditions. And there seems to be little incentive to do that, as it is a lot easier to score points in-game than trigger debt/deed card draws. A shame, as this could be the best of the West Kingdom series if the late game didn't drag so much. Props to the designers for making the automa easy to operate, while still feeling like a real (cheating) opponent.

I think this game is great without expansions, but they do add insane variety at the cost of increased set up time and minimal additional rules. Despite how busy the table might look to a bystander, the game flows very smoothly.
