Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Only played solo. I think the artwork, material and quality of the game are great. Unfortunately, I find the management effort for this type of game to be too high (always clear the right column completely, move everything to the right and fill it up). Unfortunately, the game always feels the same somehow, and the objective cards don't change that. I have no idea, something is just missing. For me there was no tension to want to solve the "puzzle" again.

This is another great addition to the Flatout Games square box line, along with Calico and Cascadia. It's colorful, vibrant and a good little puzzle to solve. Even though it's pretty abstract, I like the theme. It gives it a great table presence, and you can tell all the components are lovingly crafted to add to that experience. The gameplay, while nothing too intricate, is straightforward and enjoyable. It can be brain-burning, but there's lots of ways to score points, so there's always an out when faced with a tough decision. My main complaint: my wife is too good at it!

I enjoy Calico and Cascadia, so I expected to feel the same about Verdant, but I was disappointed. I play almost strictly solo and found the solo rules incomplete - it took muddling through an entire game to figure out how to get thumb tokens (I finally found it buried in a paragraph under multiplayer.) Aside from that, the solo version felt like points were more dependent on luck than strategy and I generally do not enjoy luck-based games.
