Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Phase Order implies that turns may not be played the same way as before and/or after.

This game looks pretty fun but I probably have no business buying it until I've spent more time playing with all my Arcadia Quest stuff. I think I prefer it when these types of games have automated baddies.

Enjoyed, at times. Once you finally make it through instructions and learn to play with all the fiddley rules. After 6 plays I find the villain OP. Small house rule to balance and make finding shrines valuable. I gotta give props to the care into the production A++ and to the designers activeness in the forums. Passion product for sure. Unfortunately we have sold. Just didn't fit our gaming group. Especially with kids getting busy, grown up and not playing much. Sometime good games fall short.

Got to play test a few times. Valor and Villainy does a really impressive job of hitting the tone and richness of a much more in-depth RPG experience in a single-session, quite accessible game. The work put into tightening and balancing the game so well really shows. I've had a bunch of fun playing with experienced gamers who went all in on strategy, but also played it with some relative gaming novices who were quickly able to grasp mechanics that were new to them and had a blast exploring and developing their characters. Tons of fun.
