Unlock! is a cooperative card game inspired by escape rooms that uses a simple system which allows you to search scenes, combine objects, and solve riddles. Play Unlock! to embark on great adventures, while seated at a table using only cards and a companion app that can provide clues, check codes, monitor time remaining, etc.
Unlock! Escape Adventures includes three separate scenarios for you to explore:
In The Formula, you enter a secret laboratory to recover a mysterious serum that has been developed by a scientist. Will you solve all the riddles and get out in less than an hour?
In Squeek & Sausage, you need to thwart the plans of the despicable Professor Noside!
In The Island of Doctor Goorse, you must visit the island of an eccentric antique collector billionaire and overcome its traps!
An included ten-card tutorial allows you to learn how to play without reading the game rules.
Use the link below in order to download the Tutorial and a demonstration scenario, both in print-and-play!

After having played the PnP 'how-to..' and intro scenario..Cool idea, probably play if asked but won't buy myself..meh.. Update: found a cheap copy to play during a weekend away with friends, so bought it. While it introduces some cool ideas for riddles, it can at times go to such stretches that makes you want to bang your head against the wall, thinking the extent of where designers might go in order to make an escape game based solely on cards. I am officially done with this game, since the scenarios are one-offs and I am not even vaguely interested in getting invested in the Unlock sequel coming out later this year.

Compared to other escape games played, this one has several pros. 1) Replayable - no components are destroyed (a huge deal for some people, I personally don't care) 2) Very clearly communicated what clues to use and what to discard (stops you going in circles) 3) Only uses a deck of cards. Now while this limits a lot of clever stuff like hiding things in/on the box etc. it does make everything so much clearer. All of the above may make this game a bit easier than other escape games, but I'm okay with that. Now for the elephant in the room. It requires an app. That definitely puts a limitation and probably an expiry date on the game. And don't stash this in your fallout shelter either, unless you download the app as well. The information that you NEED the app to play is on the box, but only on the back and in the kind of regular "visit our social media" looking section, so you may very well miss it. That kind of information needs to be plastered on the front cover. Would be 9 but the "needs an app" part coming as a surprise pulls it down to 7.

Unlock basically is a room escape experience in a boardgame format. You are trying to solve a series of puzzles within the given time. The game uses a smartphone app for checking your answers to some of the problems. Moreover, the app also keeps track of time and enforces penalties. The core of the game is quite robust provided that the app does not crash. The fun factor in the game will be highly dependent on the design of the scenarios. Illogical puzzles or stupid storylines will ruin the experience while ingenuity will keep you thrilled. Haven’t played any of the official scenarios but if they are even close to the level of the introductory one, Unlock will deliver fun. It has to be kept in mind, though, that Unlock is for one time use only.
