Unearth is quite beautiful, although it seems a bit too fiddly for the game inside and the gameplay is somewhat bland.

This game isn't for me, as I didn't like the randomness and the inability to mitigate it very well. Better rolls win depending on which cards are out. Probably a good gateway.

Unearth is a clever game of dice placement, where players compete to explore and unearth ancient ruins. The core mechanic is quite simple: each turn a player must choose a ruin card and roll one of his/her dice (one d4, three d6, one d8), then place that dice on the card. If the roll is low (1, 2 or 3) the player gets a stone (6 connected stones grant an objective worth some victory points at the end of the game), while higher rolls allow the player to have a shot at claiming the ruin card (each ruin has a target number: when the sum of dice on it reach that number, the card is claimed by whoever has the highest valued due on it). Sets of claimed ruin cards also grant points at the end of the game. The game moves at a brisk pace, and it is somewhat engaging, while a bit on the dry side: it is definitely abstract (the theme is... thin), and perhaps lacks some sort of narrative arch (you do exactly the same from the beginning to the end). I didn't try it with just 2, but I am quite sure it doesn't scale well to that player count. Anyway, it is fast (under an hour), and it should at least give a few plays before becoming a bit stale.
