Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

This does so many things right, that I hope Undaunted: Normandy is revisited with innovations introduced in Stalingrad: 1) A campaign that can be reset after each run; 2) Many branching paths to resolving the campaign; 3) Veterans and Reserves to make your Squads more flexible or brittle; 4) Plenty of special units that appear occassionally to add challanges and advantages to winning the battle; 5) Squad Integration allows for a weak squad to get a fresh infusion of stronger mates; 6) A variety of new terrain and effects that capture the nature of city fighting and the degradation/fortification of buildings; 7) New rules for Routing and spawning unit counters. But more than anything, thanks to the Casualty and Upgrade phases, every battle matters. It matters for what scenario is played next. It matters because you may lose veteran squad members or a specialist from an unlocked team permanently. It matters for what parts of the larger map your side controls. It all makes for a fun, entertaining, and sometimes frustrating experience.

Sold. The campaign mechanism is more investment than I want in what was once a simple deck building game. I'll stick with Normandy.

Disappointing. We didn't like the scenario construction -- in too many cases there weren't good choices, just roll the dice and see what happens.
