The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

This expansion makes Tzolk'in a complete experience which you don't want to avoid from now on. I'm playing with all modules, which are making almost whole different (and better!) game.

Primarily play with 2 players so the 5 player addition doesn't appeal to me...nor would the added game length at that player count. That said, it's a solid (but unnecessary) expansion for me. We haven't exhausted the replayability of the original but the varied player powers (Tribes) do keep things fresh. We also added all the quick actions and Prophecy components which worked well even at 2 players. These definitely add to the forward strategic planning challenge without increasing the overall complexity. We each scored 20 points lower than an average but I expect that to improve with more plays. Also like the upgradable buildings. Great concept! I expect we'll use the expansion most of the time unless teaching a new player.
Base the Bass
Player starting abilities and new buildings are two great features! I didn't like the calamities much. The promo ability is unbalanced - needs FAQ.
