Replayed Trickerion to see if I wanted to get this expansion and I definitely do. I still love the game, and am excited even to have just the cool new personalized tricks for each magician, the solo mode, and the new magicians themselves. The rest of the expansion content looks fantastic as well, and I'm looking forward to using it!! Update: still have not gotten to try this, any time I return to Trickerion, it has been too long so I play the base game/base + dark alley to relearn, but by the end my brain is too melted to continue!! Hopefully when we have a house with dedicated gaming space??

Introduces the Academy which was is a little confusing at first but becomes pretty clear once you use it. Tricks in Practice rooms have their yields increased when performing them. Tricks in Classrooms are performed for free every turn, which is amazing, but have their yields severely limited depending on the room it is placed in. Building rooms also goes towards a scoring bonus at the end of the game and placing tricks in the rooms can grant incredibly handy bonuses and a good number of points at the cost of some precious coins. Excellent expansion that adds even more painful choices to make each turn.

For as much good as this expansion brings, the drawbacks are too significant for me to ignore. First, the good. The training and classrooms are an excellent addition, allowing you to strategically "retire" tricks, but still get ongoing points for them round after round, or make them better through training. That's awesome. But the Protege adds a solid 45-60 minutes to the game play as in a four player game you now take 28 more actions per game. That moves this from a 150 minute euro to an almost 4 hour affair even with experienced players. Furthermore, the Protege can be upgraded up to three times with special abilities, which sounds cool, but between the special ability of your magician, three special abilities on your Protege and all the special abilities on the Special Assignment Dark Alley cards, there is simply too much to have to keep track of with this expansion. Furthermore, the renovating of rooms seems like something they just threw into the expansion because playtesting showed that with the extra worker, everyone was hand over fist with money late in the game and they had to throw something in there that you could spend it on. For me, I would almost like to play with this expansion using the side board for the Academy, but WITHOUT including the Protege (or making you have to hire him in the Downtown area). I think that would make for a better (and shorter) game.
