A strong game by Stefen Feld, who is excellent at making games that I really love for about 5-10 plays. The Mancala-like action mechanic is very interesting and mind blowing for a few plays. My second favorite Feld game, after Year of the Dragon (note: I havent yet played Die Burgen, which is rated highly). I recommend Trajan, but I dont know that I would still be interested in it after playing it 10 times.

The mancala action selection is mind boggling. It is incredibly frustrating, because rarely can you do the action you really want to do and planning ahead is tough. It's also really fun!

The good: 1. If i had to choose, this game does “but i NEED to do EVERYTHING now!” better than any other game. 2. One of best variable setups of all time. And board changes every round like a Luciani game. 3. Along with Tzolkins wheels and Amerigo cube tower, the best action selection system of all time. The bad: 1. The time track in this game may be the most fiddly mechanism in any game i own. Im not sure we have had a game of this yet where we didnt forget to advance time at least once. 2. I kinda wish ALL the areas were interconnected instead of half of them. Maybe this is for the best though. Felds push-pull meets the “kid in a candy store” setup variability of Luciani and Tascini?! Yes please! Without the rondel, this would have been a fine game that would be getting replaced and outmoded by recent games like Gugong. Instead, in one of his greatest design decisions of all time, feld throws in the colored dishes and transforms this into a timeless classic that still holds up today. With that rondel, im not sure when they are gonna be able beat thIs one and make a better “playground” game; or “five minigames smashed together” game.
