Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

travelling.. meh.. I tried to focus on travelling for 5 games in a row. I lost all 5 games. Other than that, it's really great.
Afrochiapet
A medium-weight dice placement game where you (keyword) attempt to develop trade routes in Eurasia. Like other Euros, Marco Polo's board is rife with attractive options but as you will quickly learn, there's limited time to do them. Rounds last as long as available dice and their placement affects action strength and action costs. Gameplay is easy to learn and teach, but I feel MP is a little dry for my tastes. Outside of camels the resources serve only to be converted into points or actions. It makes sense thematically that you are trading goods, but the gameplay never seemed to evolve into anything more. I'm hard-pressed to recall anything memorable over my plays of MP. Despite that, MP does present a unique experience of how arduous a journey might have been during the time period. There is not enough time to do everything given how expensive and time-consuming travel is. These restrictions are slightly counterbalanced by getting to draft a character that bends the rules. I haven't played enough to get a consensus of game balance, but they do add some spice to an otherwise standard game.

Decent enough dice placement game held up by the interesting asymmetric player powers. The game actions boil down to get resources, travel, complete contracts - would've liked a bit more breadth. And a personal pet peeve is the character that gets to choose his die rolls - boring!! I have however found that online plays don't quite sell the full potential of some games, so I'd like to try this in person.
