Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

I've played this many times now, and it's starting to wear on me. It has not gotten better with time. It's so damn hard and random that it's frustrating. You can play the best you've ever played and if you happen to draw several event tiles in a row at just the wrong time - oops, game over. This is especially true in Mordor. Quite frankly, with games like Pandemic and Shadows over Camelot out there that fix the problems this game has, I'd rather play a different co-op game that doesn't make me so frustrated due to flaws.

130923 it's another great knizia especially outstanding as the first of this modern age of coops. I'd say its an excellent distillation of the Lotr story...both abstract and refined and yet thematic. Captures the linear path of the story but doesn't feel overly scripted.

An enjoyable experience with pretty elegant rules. We played this starting Sauron at level 10 and had a lot of fun. I can see a lot of replayability here. I will pick this hands down over Shadows anytime, but Pandemic might very slightly have this one beat. Time will tell.
