The Isofarian Guard (Kickstarter)
45m - 90m

The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

LD. Huge and very expensive 1-2p coop game. Takes too much table space. Story and solo play is praised, but lots of grind to craft items and fight. 2nd print has some fixes and rules improvements.

There's lots of things I'm really enjoying about The Isofarian Guard. - the "open-world" really is open. I enjoy that you can play the game at your own pace too. I like exploring and fighting a bunch of enemies and getting more items in the form of enemy drops, Lux, Sil etc. Then you can pick up the main storyline when you want or just continue exploring. Yes, there can be grinding elements to this game. But I find the character upgrades, weapons and items etc interesting and rewarding. So I don't mind grinding! You can always complete a little more of the story if the grinding has become too repetitive for you. New rules have been released to help minimize some of the grinding - I'm loving the differences between Grigory and Alek with their different skill trees and abilities. They really feel like 2 different characters with their own personalities - Going into the towns and cities makes the world feel dynamic and alive. I love selling some enemy drop items in the marketplaces to get more Sil. Crafting weapons, armour and other helpful accessories is super satisfying - The field event cards also add flavour and life to the land of Isofar. You're not just moving from one place to another. Events happen along the way. Some small, some bigger, but it all adds to making Isofar feel real with actual people living there. Some friend, some foe - I LOVE the enemy AI cards. They are so well themed to the different types of enemies making you actually feel like you're fighting different enemies. The enemy difficulty levels have also been scaled to which Chapter of the Campaign you're in. So you'll still meet challenging enemies even though your Guards are leveling up and becoming stronger. You will be having combat A LOT. So if the combat mechanics don't look fun and/or interesting to you, then this isn't a game for you - I'm really enjoying the story. It's compelling to me and I care about my characters. I don't want to stop playing! - I'm generally a huge fan of GameTrayz full stop. Putting the player boards back in the GameTrayz holds all the stat cubes and cards in place, which is awesome and just makes taking a short break from the game so much easier. You know, when you need to actually sleep and eat ;-) - I appreciate all the card dividers and that the cards were already in the correct order when you open the packets. It made the unpacking and setting up for the first game somewhat less overwhelming. When you first open the box, it's like "Wow! This is a LOT of stuff!" - The Isofarian Guard rules pop website is super handy: https://isofarian-guard.rulepop.com/ - Sir Eric of Isofar is on hand here on BGG to answer questions. Thank you Sir Eric! - Lots of side quests, bounty quests and caravan quests. Just so much fun stuff to do! Overall I'm just a little blown away by this game. I think it's a board game that I've always dreamt of playing, but it didn't exist. Until now :-)

I have been playing approx. 15 hours now and loved every second of it. Amazing story, great mechanisms and full of surprises.
