Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

This is a serviceable game. It does several things well: a balance of different game phases, having a deck of cards with a lot of duplicates (so you don't have to memorize a bunch of crazy text powers), different scoring opportunities. The down side is the Lessons; you probably have to memorize them all to play optimally. Still, it was fun enough even not knowing what they were. Also odd: secret costs for cards. Fun for a light game with friends but tournament play would be tough to catch cheaters. I mean, don't cheat, but it seems a little more ripe for abuse than some other games that you pay to take the card in hand, and not when you play it (unless I misunderstood). But those minor gripes aside, I'd play again. It is certainly a MUCH better design than, say, Wingspan or Terraforming Mars. Oh, and the wife loved this one, so those of you with reluctant gaming spouses, especially those who love cats, this might be good for them. :D

Adds a nice touch to the polyomino sub-genre. The goal cards are really key to playing this one, so repeat play is required. Amazing production! I'm just not sure it is more fun and more different from other polyomino games.

Love this game! It's very versatile and works at 2p+. We often like to play the family rules for a quicker simpler game or if introducing new gamers. The theme and art is awesome and I love the upgraded cats and fish that came with he KS pack.
