The Big Book of Madness
60m - 90m

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Player elimination occurs in multiple-player games (>2) when a player can be eliminated from the game and play continues without the eliminated player.
Player Elimination
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

This is such an amazing co-op game that has players really work together 'solving puzzles', bannishing curses and resealing the big book of madness. Each player acquires their own element cards and magic spells, which allows them to speicialise in unique and powerful ways. This is a thinky and challenging game, but oh so rewarding when you win!

I like the game, but don't care for the backstory very much. It doesn't make sense to me from a story perspective that it doesn't matter if you let monsters 1-5 go without defeating them, but you have to defeat the last monster in order to win the game. This would be much more acceptable if the Book of Madness is a test and that the final monster is the final exam and true test, with all other monsters before the final offer ways of boosting your overall grade/score. Fail the final, you fail the test, even if you happen to defeat all prior monsters. Pass only the final you get a C, one additional monster and you receive a C+. Pass the final, and defeat 2 additional monsters, you get a B, 3 you get a B+. Pass the final, and defeat 4 additional monsters, you get an A, 5 an A+. I could see how people could be turned off from receiving a grade, but they are supposed to be students of magic anyways and thus my proposed backstory fits a lot better. I like this game a lot because it really does require cooperation between players if they are to succeed. While the game supports up to 5 players, I suspect that 3 is the sweet spot for this game. With 3 not everyone can specialize in one color and nothing else. It will still require a good amount of cooperation as there will still be a color that won't be mastered by any one player. 2 players plays quite well and offers the greatest amount of deck building. The game is perfectly suited to being played solo, but requires the person to play more than one character. I suspect most people that attempt to play this game solo, will do so by playing 2 characters at a time. There are better co-op deckbuilders out there, but just going by looks this is one of the best looking. It is a game the kids can play and enjoy.

I don't like cooperatives and I like this one. Very brainy, very difficult. Rewarding solo. Very demanding deck construction and management. My only downside is the great deployment it requires.
