Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection

A good game that streamlines a lot of what made Terraforming Mars too long and focuses on the best aspects of the game. It also greatly improves on the artwork of that game. However, I am not convinced that this game is better than race for the galaxy (although it is better produced) in what it took from that game. I also wish that the deck of cards was not so large as to end up with many cards of the same type so it can feel like you are only trying to play one card most of the time if you get repetitive draws.

Still waiting to get the KS to the table after receiving over a year ago. Sitting on shelf of shame still :(

I enjoyed Terraforming Mars, but felt that the playtime was long. Also, it was hard to teach new players b/c the card drafting was nuanced and required multiple plays to understand. Ares Expedition addressed my minor gripes. It's a great game.
