Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

1 play / 3 players LIKE: I liked trying to find synergy between cards, and trying to build an engine of some sort. I liked how quick the turns happen. DISLIKE: I am not a fan of multi-player solitaire. I spent most of the game with my reading glasses (because of the abundant text on the cards), not caring what other players were doing. Additionally, what I didn't like was the randomness of card draws leads to stagnant engines. If I rarely see a type of card I am hoping to get to help my engine, but I don't get what I need for several turns, then the game feels stagnant. I also did not like the rules, there were too many ambiguous rules, especially for turn order. Fiddly, the production cubes were not really needed. I later noticed that some of the larger scoring cards are rare, and drawn largely by chance. Not appealing to play this again. OVERALL: This is an okay game, but it did not change my attitude towards Terraforming Mars, a game a find quite tedious. Compared to San Juan, I still enjoy San Juan more for its simplicity in the cards, AND, more importantly, in San Juan the tension of trying to predict what your opponents are choosing can greatly help your turns, whereas I didn't feel that same tension here. Perhaps because multiple players could choose the same action. Thus, this game does not feel as interactive as other games of similar vein. Similar games: Imperial Settlers, San Juan (SJ > TM:AE), Race for the Galaxy (I have not played yet), New Frontiers (NF > TM:AE), Puerto Rico (the best)

KS was just delivered and could not be happier with this game! The new Card Mechanics and not knowing what actions you can take each round really set this one apart from the original version... Love it!!

It's good, but it isn't really quick enough to make it a short alternative to Terraforming Mars. It lacks some of the appeal of TM, and I don't really ever have a reason to choose to play it over TM. I'm most likely going to use it occasionally as a version of TM for travelling.
