Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

There is so much here I should hate: highly abstract game play that seems to reward incredibly slow analysis. But days after playing two quick games, I couldn't get it out of my mind. I should have had more faith in Chvatil. The secret information, rotating goals, and sheer complexity means that playing from the hip works reasonably well. The result has some entertaining chaos, surprising turnabouts, but still feels like skill plays a large part of it.

I got the upgraded pieces. I can include the older board and chits, if desired. Comes with the Everfrost expansion.

One of the best strategy abstracts I've ever played, if not the best. The combination of the dispute for control of the board, the achievement of missions, makes it very addictive. While keeping a few simple rules for the average player.
