Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Games that use the Memory mechanic require players to recall previous game events or information in order to reach an objective.
Memory
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

Cut-throat survival game. Quite deterministic. See Survive: Space Attack! for full review. # Very random and chaotic. Similar games: * Survive: Space Attack! (sequel, very similar game, less thematic and less intuitive, more complex, more tile effects and abilities, e.g., switching or teleporting pieces, capturing of monsters, more weapons to hunt monsters) * Lifeboats (survival party game, high focus on negotiation) * Atlantis Rising (fully cooperative, sinking island, push your luck, dice rolling) * Forbidden Island (fully cooperative, family-friendly, sinking island, move and collect) * Black Fleet * Polynesia

Easy to explain, fun to play. Has plenty of decision making and LOTS of screw-your-neighbor. Looks nice too. Bumped it up to an 8 after a good time playing with the kids. This'll get more plays.

Always pull this out for the family around the holidays. Forgive me for having the shark eat your 6 point meeple!
