Stroganov (Kickstarter – Deluxe Edition)
90m - 90m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 12+
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

After one play I can say there is a really nice rythem which makes the game fkow smoothly. The mechanics are familiar and yet the games theme and flow make for a unique experience. As for production, I think its OK, but after Game Brewer set the bar so high with Gugong - Stroganov was never going to eclipse it, not in this economy anyway. My biggest disappointment was the very cheaply made gameboard which, lets face it, is just awful. Wish there was a Neoprene mat. Aside from this I see myself getting many plays on what I deem an instant classic.

A new big game from Andreas Steding and Game Brewer that combines action selection and one-way track. Players must travel across Siberia and collect pelts from various animals to gain rewards and score points. The game is quite fun and will definitely reward gamers who can plan ahead to achieve their strategy. Although there are a number of actions players can take each turn, the game is definitely all about hunting animals and collecting pelts so the game does start to feel a bit repetitive after a while, especially since there is no real sense of engine-building. The production and illustrations are great but we found the board iconography to be very confusing. Just a few issues with what is otherwise a very good game.

Stroganov per se isn't a bad game from my point of view. I think it's actually quite good. But what pushed this game so down for me is the playing time and the analysis paralysis that can haunt everybody in this one. In a 4-player game I played two rounds of explorers between my turns and still could think about my turns and I did mine in 0.5-2 minutes. The whole game took 2h45. At two it still took 1h30 which both are in my point of view too long for what I get out of this one.
