Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

3 plays / 3, 4 players LIKE: Excellent gateway game. Tiny bit of engine building with a lot of push-your-luck mechanisms and dice rolling. I like the arc of the game from getting resources to scoring points on the cards. Many ways to mitigate the dice rolls. One way that Stone Age is great, is that if you push your luck too far, you can still feed your workers, but it might be at a cost of 'eating' a higher-valued resource than food. DISLIKE: Randomness in the dice. A little on the lighter side of the weight spectrum. OVERALL: Good and solid game, depending on the level the players are at. Mammoth expansion is good, adds another option.

A better worker placement game than Lords of Waterdeep in that theres more activities for you to do.
