Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

I play Small World primarily as a 2-player game with my son. River World is a great addition to the base game and enhances the 2-player game by throwing in a bit of variety and unknown quantities to each turn. River World's main feature is the game board that replaces the one from the base game. It introduces rivers, harbors, a temple, and the shipyard. Along with the new board comes pirates, the caravel, and turn events. Pirates are a central piece to the river theme. They occupy river spaces and when the pirates events occur they block adjacent spaces from scoring 1 VP. Pirates quickly put a damper on scoring efforts and have to be dealt with. The trick is figuring out whether you or your opponent(s) will be the one's taking care of them. The events take the place of the turn track and are a welcome upgrade from the base games method of tracking turns. In addition to tracking which turn you are on they also introduce a twist to each turn. Pirates may invade the river, the rivers may freeze, or storms may make river passage nearly impossible. The events introduce a dynamic board that breaks with the static feeling of the base game. Over 10 turns (2-player game) there is a lot of chance for strategies to shift as needs change each turn. There is also the temple space on the board that allows the controlling player to peek at the next turn's event. This is the best part of the expansion. There is also the harbors which grant extra VP each turn and the shipyard which grants the controlling player a caravel (ship) to use on the river and launch conquests from. The caravel can be a powerful means by which to take over the harbors! Note; it is recommended to take out the Flying ability from the game as it would be unbalanced with the way harbors are intended. Over all we love this expansion and it has renewed my interest in Small World.

Seems a bit unbalanced I like how it add new maps to the game. The zone specific extra ability i a bit less interesting. I dislike how the first player is a drawback when pirates enter the game, he will suffer the biggest penalty.
