Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

River World is a very nice expansion to Small World that alters the dynamics of the base game. Your races will get divided up by the rivers, while being compelled to go forth and explore new territories. The harbors are an interesting bonus. The pirates are an interesting nuisance, while their effect needs to be mitigated with the Caravel and The Seer (to gain foresight into their appearance). As always, decisions must seek benefits relative to the other players. This is a fun addition to the SW world. The only minor nag is that the scoring effect of the harbors and pirates can slow things down a wee bit. If you enjoy Small World, it's worth a try.

LOVE this game and have loved this back to Vinci back to Evo (in a few ways). I am almost always willing to play. The variety in it, the replay, and the simplicity. And the damned Chance die! The app and digital versions are awesome, portable, and saved me in the hospitalizations. I'm looking at acquiring games I want to keep physical copies of as I prepare for the future of my collections and moving some to digital-only copies that I won't care if I can't play or not again. All of my hospitalizations in the last few years have made me need more digital versions I can play on my iPad or on my hospital bed table.

Average expansion, adds some fun, removes nothing of already existing fun, but doesn't feel essential in any way.
