This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
In games with a trading mechanic, the players can exchange game items between each other.
Trading

This is a game I will only ever be able to get to the table situationally, with people who are willing to drink the Kool-Aid. It’s a trading game which appears more complicated than it actually is. It scales well with player count and is a deeply enriching, social, thought-provoking interactive experience. If any game has sold me on “trading colored cubes for different colored cubes,” it’s this. All negatives are from the poor execution on organizing the game. It’s fine with Plano boxes though.

AKA One man and his Sci-Fi thesaurus. This is a brilliant trading and negotiation game for 4-8(!) (Correction: 3-9) in which everything is tradeable but victory points. It completely relies on great communication and observation combined with the ability to make relative value judgements across the table with time pressure. It was played twice; I came second twice. Our first game had a points spread of fewer than 4 between first and third. John M won the second by over twenty. I played the species that has loads of colonies, and in the second game I played as the species that creates wild goods. The experiences were wildly different but despite the second game feeling like it was constrained by a smaller supply of goods in the galaxy I probably enjoyed it more knowing the game a bit better. For anyone considering it, it is incredibly pure in its form; if you don't want to be negotiating and renegotiating wildly under pressure you are NOT going to enjoy this. I really, really did.

Interesting game that we tried out with 9 brand new players! Insane, I know. Half the group wanted to immediately play again, and the other half wasn't so sure. Want to try it out again, but maybe not the full 9 until we have a bit more experience. Very different in a good way.
