Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

It's fun and has a nice duration. We played back to back games on our first time. My rating may go up with more plays.

At GenCon this year I had the good fortune of getting to try this, and it was a very fun experience. In addition to having the defined traits of a strong Euro (tough choices, tight actions) as well as several strategic and tactical area control aspects, this game has some neat unique elements as well. Most notable of those is a spin on the signature Van Ness design of having completely different yet interconnected board areas/mechanisms, as seen in great titles such as Queen's Gambit and, more recently, Risk: Star Wars Edition. Unlike those games, however, Shifting Realms uses a universal rule set across all boards so learning is quite easy and game play moves along smoothly, and lends itself to added replay value since the "realms" can be painlessly intermixed for fun new experiences. One other key takeaway I had about the design was how smartly combat was limited such that it does not dominate the game. While combat and confrontation is helpful (if not necessary) for playing the game well, it would be impossible to win through sheer brute force alone. Additionally, when combat does occur, the design allows it to only hinder, not devastate, the defender so that no players are ever pushed too far behind from it (or end up feeling too much angst towards their fellow gamer). Finally, combat is kept extremely simple and light (no dice!) so that the game is not needlessly bogged down with it. Our group had a blast playing this, from erecting impenetrable buildings to moving the dragon in a destructive swath across the boards to pulling off a sneak victory by completing a Pirate Raid, constructing a dwarven stronghold and burying a hidden treasure... all in one final turn (it was me and it felt good). A truly engaging experience with tons of variability and many paths to victory. Can't wait to play it again!
