Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

I didn’t know it was legal to straight rip this much of another game design, but whatever, the end result is an improvement on Merchants & Marauders, so... The combat mechanism in MM is better in and of itself, but in a game where you can easily luck into a win without ever fighting it seems to just add pointless rules overhead. SoL’s extremely basic dice-chucking gets the job done quickly, and ties in some other game-state progress to boot, where even a fail can get you stuff from your character cards. So SoL is less interesting in terms of game design but more in keeping with the luck-fest nature of both games. The other major fix is the port action, which doesn’t cause the game to grind to a halt as the player checks off everything on the list. The app (SoL) isn’t really a big improvement on the decks of tiny cards (MM), but I assume it kept costs down or something. It’s strange to be comparing the games down to individual component upgrades, but SoL really is just a revision. I asked in all seriousness if it was a Marcussen revised edition with a new title. I would have easily believed it. Bottom line for me is I sold my copy of MM years ago and don’t need to ever play it again. I’d be happy to play SoL again soon, and although it may not hold up to a ton of scrutiny, when I’m in the mood for a light adventure this one is much better than most.

Hard to play when the app isn’t available by the time the game arrives. Sold. Gonna roll with TEP and Merchants and Marauders instead.

Enjoyable escape from the mundane! Played it at a friends and greatly enjoyed the experience. It feels like FTL meets Sid Meier's Pirates, but multiplayer and a board game :)
