Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Ruination is one of those games whose dynamics seemed familiar to me when I first read the rulebook. The setting is fabulous, as are the illustrations. The game is fast dynamic, tense until the last fight. I like the idea that no battle is final and a player can recreate his army from scratch by re-entering the game.

This was play tested in an early iteration at my design group. When you first play the battles can take a bit to get used to, but once you've got that this is a punch each other in the face type game. You shouldn't turtle in this one and you shouldn't put all your bastions in a single area. The art is amazing!

Outside of the action selection, the game feels like a greatest hits album with a disjointed flow to its tracklist. Even the action selection doesn't feel cohesive; both in how certain stacks can stagnate and in how the non-card based actions are taken. And then it gate keeps the fun card powers behind a stodgy resource management subsystem. At least it does manage to provide decent incentives towards combat. But overall, no thanks.
