Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling

Played at Origins 2018 for the first time. Bought a copy on site. Plus the expansion. Really love the dice manipulation mechanic. Update: didn't like the expansion where you fight monsters even though that sounds like it should be great.

Game for having a good time with your bros rolling dice. If you have no bros, works very well solo. In fact, I might like it solo more, because you don't have to wait for anyone do do their math. Dice are really nice, good weight, feel and colors. The biggest drawback is the art, the entire Roll Player universe of games has absolutely awful, painfully generic art design. I would take away half a start for that alone, but I don't know how to do it. Longevity on the low side without expansions.

Roll Player is a pretty solid game with excellent graphic design. The scoring seemed nicely pre-determined such that it wasn't point salad by the end. Though many of the strategies boiled down to "plugging-in" stuff where it fit. Card and dice drafting happens a bit too few and far between to really feel as key in the game as it should. My score would be much higher if I hadn't gotten 41 points (off the charts) on my first playthrough just by doing my normal optimization thing. Apparently that's uncommon for a first playthrough so YMMV and you may get more replay value than me. (Outdated: Due to being a kickstarter, you'll be shelling out $60 for the pre-order right now which only contains some cards, a few punchboards, and some cheap dice. Now around $43 at most retail.) I really don't see a game of this weight being worth that price. For solo play, it's hard to beat and almost better that way rather than suffer player drafting when there's so little of it. Would be cool if you could literally *play* with the characters after. It might be compatible with a D&D version. Update 2021: Own the game now because it's fun to play repeatedly. It has some replay issues due to the nature of having such a small market deck. I would say there are a few criticisms I have of the game now despite it still being so solid: 1. Discarding from the market feels like shit and it NEEDS fixed. I don't care what the designers or playtesters said. Nothing is more horrifying than seeing the entire game tank for one player because their armors or best market cards ended up in the dump before they could make a single choice. 2. Personally, I would prefer a variant or add-on that gives a tiny bit more gold. I'm still clearing scores well above the solo chart in games, so it's not as if I say this because it's hard to score well. I just think gold feels sparse depending on the luck of the draw and half the game is the damn gold-sucking market. I will be creating my own variant if I don't find one in order to keep playing this. I'm still happy I bought it. Heck, I did that after I had those criticisms anyway. Here's hoping the character import to Roll Player adventures will be good!
