Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

First impression: too many things going on with lots of dependencies. A bit too long too. Looks very beautiful, but it's hard to follow everything on the map.

I was really excited to get this game but I found the game play somewhat mediocre. Certainly not a bad game and it is well produced with great art; it's just that I think there are better worker/dice placement games out there. I thought the concept of reputation (dictating the sum of the dice values you could place each round) was intriguing. It's just that it really isn't integrated into the worker placement actions all that well. I also believe the game play is too complex and long for the level of strategic depth in the game. I wouldn't use this game to introduce new players to worker placement. I also wouldn't play this game with people well versed with worker placement. So, I'm not quite sure the situation that I would get this to the table again. That said if somebody dropped it in front of me, I would play it.

8- based on 2 two-player plays. This is not a fast game, nor fast to learn. There is a natural progression, from bringining in Settlers, to housing them, instilling them in various Guilds, then promoting them to Master Artisans. This might feel limiting to some, but I enjoyed the progression and the theme comes through naturally and is well done. I anticipate additional plays will lead to a tight balance between when to go for influence in the council vs. continuing to house settlers and build buildings. I enjoy how you have two economies, money and goods. I hope it is not too slow in multiplayer - I will endeavor to find out this month. I just learned Cavern Tavern, and would say this is the slightly heavier older cousin to that game.
