This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

What an awesome design. I love how the auctions generate random piles of stuff that players will value differently. I love how you have to factor in not just spending your bid tiles for the round, but more than likely giving them to someone else. I love that you can call the auction when it suits you to force other players' hands. And I love push-your-luck mechanics! First time I've given the fabled "let's play again!" in as long as I can remember. Fast becoming a (very late to the party) Knizia fan. And having played the game, the FFG version looks to make the different tile functions really hard to internalise for new players. Plus I love the wooden sun tiles in the 'classic' version - leaning towards that one.

I must be missing the Ra gene, because I just don't feel the magic that everyone else seems to derive from this game. An in-depth exploration is probably due to see if I can uncover what I'm missing here.

150909 Still most likely one of my favorite auction games, but not feeling a huge tug to replay again and again. I suspect it has something to do with the fact my wife hates auctions. 121231 Still a great game and still getting lots of plays (relatively speaking given our game jumpiness nowadays). I agree with the sentiment it is an PYL game with an auction element. 100730 Well a classic is such for a reason. Takes a little to wrap the head around and player boards are very handy for noobs (albeit unecessary after the first play), but must say I like it quite a bit! I think once I move to Cali, if I find a good 3p+ group I will very likely end up with the knizia auction quadrilogy. Just played it a second and its already up to a 10 (admittedly in part due to the. I had a horrendous first and second rounds (and wasn't even going for monuments) and yet was able to weasel my way into being second place so yeah, fun game with lots of ways to maneuver even when things aren't going your way. Just tried it 2P. Not bad, but there is better out there. But hey, it wasn't originally a 2P game.
