Rating based on - 3 plays, 2 player In this expansion for the marble crashing game Potion Explosion you'll receive white marbles that represent the titular fifth ingredient Ghost Ectoplasm, a ghastly cauldron where that ingredient resides, and recipes for four new potions - Brew of Feather Touch, Chameleonic Varnish, Ghastly Concoction, and Dram of Poltergeist Sweat. The last two allow you to swap ingredients with the ghastly cauldron and whenever you exchange ingredients with the cauldron you receive a Reward token worth 1 point at game end. Also included with the Reward tokens are Scolding tokens worth minus 1 point at game end and 7 Professor tiles of which you choose one or two to play with per game which changes the game in some way. Professor abilities can range from the super useful (discard 2 ingredient marbles of the same colour from your hand to discard 1 of your little help tokens) to the challenging (when you place ingredients on your potion tiles you have to start with the lowest layer and proceed upwards), and some professors will scold you causing you to get docked a point at game end. Professor Prissyman does not like mess and you will receive 1 scolding token from him if you let one or more of your ingredient marbles touch the table during your turn, while Professor O'Clockitt is a frenzied little man that gives you 90 seconds to complete your turn. If time runs out you receive a scolding token and can re-start the timer. Every time you let the timer run out you get another scolding. Beastly! The regular rules for Potion Explosion remain unchanged. I don't know that the new potions are so very different from the old, but their illustrations have been kicked up a notch and are really beautiful. The potions in the original game tend to look more like liquidy potions whereas here they look more like what they're meant to represent. The Brew of Feather Touch looks very feather-y, the Chameleonic Varnish has a chameleon sitting smack dab in the middle of it, and both the Ghastly Concoction and Dram of Poltergeist Sweat show little ghosts swimming around. Potion Explosion has always been a very pretty game, but for me the gameplay is just OK. The new additions didn't make me feel differently for better or worse about the base game. They just added to setup time. The new potions fit in with the old but are not so new or mind boggling as to be essential, it's a nice concept to have the wild ingredient for new or younger players because it makes the game slightly easier but it doesn't really need it especially if you've been playing the game for a while and have already got to grips with the base game, the points gained or lost from the reward and scolding tokens are negligible in the grand scheme of things, and while I thought the professors would add an interesting wrinkle to the gameplay, it turned out that their 'powers' were minimally invasive and didn't really affect my strategy much. Maybe my feelings about the base game colours my opinion somewhat, and maybe fans of the game would think this adds quite a lot to their experience, but I would describe the overall impression left on me as overwhelmingly average. Status: SOLD with Potion Explosion

There is nothing wrong with this expansion, but like many expansions it isn't really necessary. You'd have to really play out the base game to need it.

The fifth ingredient in question (the wild white marbles) are only used in two of the expansion’s potions. The expansion is good for adding more potions — bringing the game’s grand total to 13 different potions (including the promo Fulminating Serum). However, it’s unfortunate that the Ghost Ectoplasm and Ghastly Cauldron aren’t used more often.
