Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

FUN, FUN, FUN, our family's most played game. This is a fun game and even though there is fighting it is not vindictive. The board is colorful and the pieces very good quality. It definitely keeps your interest, and plays a very quick 45-60 minutes. If there were a downside it would be that the use of all the different cards can sometimes get confusing. If they could make the card play a little more structured, we're looking at a 9 or 10. Overall a good game that I will play whenever asked, but I'm not likely to bring it out. Oh, one more thing. I have played this game now 5 times against kids only (ages 8-13). I have not only lost every game - I have finished last every game! Maybe I would score it higher if I could figure it out. Hmmmm. Good game nonetheless.

I found the additional quality of product in the Days of Wonder version, plus the changes in rules improved the game and the enjoyment level.

Thematically strong pirate game. Outguessing mechanism works, but if you get to lower hand in this game for some reason, it's very hard to recover.
