The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

A brisk and cutthroat worker-placement game of portfolio-building and resource management. What separates this from other games of its ilk is its short run time. The game plays in about half the length you expect it to, making every action seem gravely important. Add to that the fact that executing actions requires planning ahead and that it's relatively easy to disrupt other players' plans and the result is a fairly intense, competitive experience. This is as sleek and streamlined as it gets--worker placement with teeth. Fantastic. --- UPDATE: I'm beginning to feel that the game is perhaps a little too brief, barrels a little too scarce, and poor risk pulls a little too influential. The importance of the first few turns overshadows the remainder of the game, during which players are lucky to be effective in any way whatsoever.

Fiddly rules, incomplete player aids, highly imbalanced acquired powers... in short, standard fare in a time when new games are generally flawed and forgettable. On the upside there’s very little set collection!
