Pax Pamir: Second Edition (Kickstarter)
45m - 120m
1 - 5 Players
Ages 13+
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

I am honestly not sure how I feel about Pax Pamir. It's designed by my favorite board game designer, and I really admire the amount of research, thought and care Cole put into making this game. Since I am familiar with his design ethos, I know that I will enjoy this game more the more I play it. But therein lies the problem. I own this game but have only played it three times, because it is really hard to find a group of 4-5 people willing to learn and give this game the multiple tries it deserves. The game's enjoyment also really depends on the group you are playing with. This game, much like the other historical games published by Wehrlegig, is not for everyone - either due to the historical events the game depicts or because of how cutthroat the gameplay itself is. So you have to be careful about who you are introducing it to. When you play with the right group though, this game becomes a lot of fun. The components of this game are also easily the most beautiful pieces I've seen in a board game, so every time I play it in a public space, I always get asked what game it is. So I am giving this game an 8 for now, knowing fully well that it has the potential to be a 9 as I play this game more and discover all the layers in this amazing design. Note: I have also not yet tried the solo mode. (Plays: 3)

An excellent entry point into the Pax series. While Pax Ren forces you to work to get fun out of it, Pamir is immediately entertaining and accessible. It is a lot more chaotic and swingy though. I have seen a couple of games finish very abruptly due to how the cards came out, rather than clever play. More often than not though, games of Pamir will be tense build ups of players eking out slight advantages over each other, punctuated by explosive moments where the board state is altered radically. A memorable experience.

Components are top quality and the feel of this game is different from anything I've tried so far. Not a game for everyone but I love it! Update: way better at 3 players than 2 players!
