Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

There are things I like about this game, but the most important thing this game lacks is elegance. It's just so clunky. The upgrade mechanic I like, but the game slows down every time someone needs to dig through one of several decks to find the new upgrade card. For an area control deck building game, I suggest Tyrants of the Underdark as a better alternative.

I tested this extensively and enjoyed the concept, and the responsiveness of the publisher to my feedback. Looking forward to the Kickstarter!

Excellent game and one I have been following since the Kickstarter. I managed to pick it up recently at retail and I was extremely impressed with what you got in the box, plus the art by Beth Sobel is fantastic and evocative. The game is a real development on the somewhat rote deck building genre and mixes many different ideas together into a coherent package. There have been some accusations that the Mercy strategy is too powerful, but in my 3 games Cruel has won twice and someone managed to win the third game by being somewhat in the middle. My major complaint is that there are only 2 ways to play the game, both of which are very scripted and leave very little room of maneuvering. Which if these 2 paths you take has to be decided on the first turn and often by the unique card you are dealt. Highly recommended.
