Enjoyable Fantasy-themed Euro with asymmetric factions and familiar mechanics. Placing your pawns around a region to obtain resources (instead of in the region itself) is a little abstract and counterintuitive, but you soon get used to it. There is quite a bit of negative player interaction, since closing a region removes all player pieces inside it with no compensation, but it's up to the players to position their pieces so that it doesn't happen too soon. Otherwise, this is basically a game of gathering and spending resources to play buildings (with permanent special powers), cast spells (for one-time effects) and buying cards. Each of the three resource types is used in one of those actions, making them very simple. There are some nice combos, but nothing too strong. The only thing that bothered me was that incomplete regions are worth nothing at the end of the game and you may have some wasted placements. The production is fine, with pretty standard cardboard tiles and wooden pawns, but the use of Viking pieces (from the game "Vikings") feels cheap. The custom-shaped resource markers are better. Beautiful cover, but just functional and adequate in-game art.

An excellent game that I'm afraid might just not be for us. It's a spatial abstract game at heart, and carries with it all of the in-your-face blocking and bumping that implies. You have to play mean: knocking out your opponents' pieces before they can score an area and scoring your own areas before they can knock out you. In a game like this, such a style of play is required so it doesn't feel mean-spirited, it's just not fun for us to dick over each other on turn after turn. The card play and the game's economy is fascinating, and I find each decision to be really engaging and occasionally tense. OTOH, the game lasts a few rounds too long, and by game end the board state can "dry up," making the last 10 minutes or so much less interesting. I'm curious to try the expansions to see whether this might go up with more plays.

Was happy to try this one out recently as it's a tile laying game with some area enclosure. Each turn you place a double tile on the board and a meeple (if you have one) on the tile played. Once a terrain type is enclosed it gives out resources based on the people you have around that area. The game also features multi-use cards which can give immediate or ongoing benefits and don't forget about your player power. On my first play I did not quite see how everything fit together and simply went for the end game bonus monument buildings and won fairly easily. I think the only downside to Pandoria is it might be a bit long for what it is, but I also feel I need to understand how to best take advantage of the multi-use cards beyond just the end game points to really see what this game has to offer.
