Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Note: I'm still waiting for my 2nd print Kickstarter copy, but it was my first time trying it at Essen. Also, very few people know about it, so I thought I would put it on my list. This is an asymmetric two-player card game. This is the second witch-themed game I played at Essen after Septima. One player is the witch hunter, and the other is the witch. Each player has three actions, with the witch being able to upgrade one (the familiar). The game takes inspiration from Netrunner, since each player has three actions they can do on their turn from a pool of extremely different actions. There are nine villagers in the middle of the table, which are basically worker placement spots. One of these villagers is actually the witch, and the witch hunter is trying to kill them. It also takes an idea from Star Wars: Rebellion, since the witch hunter draws cards from a deck, eliminating one of the nine options as the potential witch, just like the probe deck. I met the artist (2nd picture) and discussed the game with her. The art is absolutely phenomenal and one of the big attractions of the game. I bought some of the content packs at Essen, and I'm excited to play more soon.

Diff. 2
