The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

baditude
I bought this on a whim after seeing some good reviews. It didn't seem to have too much hype and so I thought maybe there was a hidden gem here. Ultimately this is not my type of game (and I suspected as much even as I placed the order). There are some neat ideas: workers with different strengths, workers that can "threaten" other workers, and the spacial puzzle of moving through the action selection region. None of these ideas really seemed to actually make the game more interesting tho. Finally the powers that came from buildings and equipment never seemed that interesting. They were all sorta muted and it ever felt special or fun to have them working for you. Boils down to a pretty standard worker placement really. Note that I only played this at 2-players and there's a good bet that there is more tension when the board is a little more crowded.
Againsto
A fine game, if you give it a chance. The boards are visually too busy, but the mechanisms interlock quite satisfactorily. I like the worker placement itself especially.
