Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

Got the chance to play this recently. As another game that leans heavily on the concept of "soft alliances", I must admit I was very wary of this game. The game itself, however, does lend itself very well to the genre, and there is an option for most paths to be taken by most players. There's far less RNG than I had anticipated (especially compared with Root.) - in fact, the main hurdle I had to overcome on the first playthrough is that there is a walkthrough that takes you through a full round of the game covering most of the core concepts and how one may wish to partake in an aggressive, economic, varied, or diplomatic playstyle. The only caveat is that once this round is over and poeple understand how the game mechanics work, I would *STRONGLY* recommend doing a full reset, as it absolutely locks players into a certain path. Outside of this, I am definitely curious to try this again and I love the idea of each game defining the next one as well, though I'm a bit amused at the exagerrated aspects of the world building.

Boy oh howdy. Folks talk about the meta-narrative aspects of this game, which are cool (but clunky), but the actual game play is just bad. Randomness on randomness (dice combat, most of your actions are to draw cards, etc). There's nothing interesting in the game play and FREQUENTLY bad design - a die roll to just win the game, take that elements, etc. And the worst of all - gang up to prevent someone from winning. That's the worst part of Inis and it's what makes Munchkin interminable - not a pleasant comparison. The more I think of this, the less I think of it. As the Chancellor, I didn't really have a goal in the game besides killing time until I could make a die roll to win the game. There wasn't much I was 'working' towards. Ultimately, I think the 'chronicle' is cool and hope it's stolen for a game that's fun to play. Putting it into a drafting or deckbuilding game could be super interesting - so you're next set of Dominion is chosen based on how the previous game went, for example.

This game, to me, is about making stories. I love being able to look back at the history of this fantasy land that's been shaped in a purely unscripted fashion. It makes me think about how history is written, how little events fit into larger narratives and how power works. I've always been a sucker for weird board states and this box gives players so many buttons to push and see what happens. Like many, I agree that it's not a game you should play just to win, that would be missing the point. The game is larger than any single session. So much larger. What makes it a top ranking game for me is how unapologetic the design is in all its glory. It's a framework for the mind to fill in the gaps.
