Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

It took a little while to get the hang of the game mechanics, but now we've got it down. We like it as a two player game. Our boardgame group had trouble learning the game (somewhat unusual mechanics they didn't understand because of how the Italian-English translation was worded). We played it with them to help them get a handle on it. In this era when new designers from other language cultures create games with new styles of mechanics, it's a good plan to be more patient with translated rules, and perhaps ask more questions of the designers via bgg.

Too take-that for me. For instance, there's not much you can do without resources, but one of the Curse cards that might get dumped on you out of the blue prevents you collecting resources on the next turn. I found the experience quite frustrating. Also too long, at more than three hours, though that did includes rules explanation. The artwork you could describe as either atmospheric or just dim and dull, according to taste. Some production glitches need ironing out, such as the names of the houses on the player boards don't match the spelling of the same names on the heirloom cards.

This is a terrible game, purely due to the awful `take that` element. I was hammered by the other two players and had absolutely no chance of winning whatsoever.
