GROUP AVERAGE: 7.07 / 10 Bryle: 6.75 Fung: 7.75 Sixtus: 6.7 A straight rip off of Puerto Rico that plays in a third of the time. New Frontiers lacks difficult decisions and felt like it played itself. Overall, New Frontiers is a solid design that is likely to resonate more with other players than it did with me.
Andy Parsons
Race for the Galaxy is a favourite game. New Frontiers is that game with tiles, chits and big plastic cubes replacing cards. There are differences beyond the components. The action selection in turn order rather than simultaneously is reminiscent of Puerto Rico. The availability of all developments for purchase eliminates the luck factor of drawing the one you most need from a fat deck. Rather than simply paying the cost to settle a planet, New Frontiers adds a requirement for one or two colonists, which feels a complication it didn't really need. The Race icons remain a hurdle to haul new players over, though this iteration's big tiles allow the space for greater use of text. What New Frontiers currently lacks is the great variety that Race's expanded deck provides. I rate Race a nine and it is arguable that New Frontiers provides a playing experience so similar that it should also rate a nine. It's precisely because the playing experience is so similar that I just can't get as excited about it. Production quality is very good; the tiles are solidly made and the transparent resource cubes are a thing to behold. The large planet tiles offer more room for the familiar Race artwork, though the opposite may be true of the low value developments.

It a decent game with more interaction than the card version because of the limited number of developments and ability to take planets others may want. Still lots of extra pieces and clunkiness that is avoided in the card game.
