After 15+ solo games against the AI and some solo games playing both sides games I can clearly say that this addon really refines the already brillant base game. The addition of the new loyalty mechanic works flawlessly and gives you additional ways to influence the game through the unique abilities of the two very different houses (there are some really cool abilities like imprisoning meeples, stealing resources from the other player etc.). Enhancing your relation with these two houses gives the game an additional layer that should not be ignored (even though you can still try to beat the game the "classic" way only). What's even better on this addon: The game board is now modular, you can either make your own random board or follow the proposed 16 combinations, each one gives a different experience (some tend to drag out a game by only giving meak amounts of resources, others give a short and bloody conflict, some need careful planning etc.). This - together with new objectives, buildings and the four new meeples with different abilities - makes the game even more replayable than the already very variable base game. I can't stop wondering how Ben managed to stuff so much gameplay in this small package, it's staggering really. The small footprint also deserves to be mentioned: You can basically set up the game in half a minute and even the tiniest coffee table is more than enough to play on. To sum things up: This game and its addon are an absolutely tremendous achievement I can't stop praising. It has all I always wished for in a game: the gameplay experience of a "big" worker placement game in a historical Japanese setting that's both accessible and complex - and takes not much space on the table. This game definitively is a keeper for me.
